Leaves take in water; the main function of the leaves is to capture water; water vapor moves into the leave during photosynthesis.

The Truth:

The truth is that leaves function is photosynthesis, and the roots have the function in the intake of water.

This misconceptions is found in most elementary students. Most students around that age have limited classification skills not a lack of understanding, and students tend to give plants human like characteristics. Most students can only identify the stem, leaves, and flowers of plants. Most kids don't recognize the roots as a structure of the plant.

There are some simple things that we can do to stop this from happening. We can grow plants without soil, so the students can see the roots in action. We can have students experience observing different root structure's of a verity of plants, both flowering and not flowering plants. Explain the different functions of all plants structures and explain the needs of the each system and why they are important the plants needs.
